Pros to Accepting Insurance
1. Lowers the financial barriers to accessing therapy.
Cons to Accepting Insurance
1. Couples Therapy is not usually covered by insurance plans except in certain circumstances where it is tied to one of the partner’s diagnosable mental health conditions.
2. When I work with couples, I approach treatment with the relationship being my client, not one partner or the other. Unfortunately insurance coverage does not typically work in a way that is congruent with my approach. Giving one partner a diagnosis presents a legal and ethical dilemma for me when I am treating a relationship.
3. Insurance requires a formal diagnosis for coverage which can feel misaligned with the relational focus of couples therapy, and the needs of clients seeking personal growth rather than treatment for a disorder.
I accept private pay and offer sliding scale for members of the community on a case-by-case basis.
